Source & method ↗

Source snapshots, not a complete current inventory. This layer counts records classified in the ONS/Ordnance Survey July 2024 snapshot. It does not establish how many active worship premises exist today.

Religion groups follow explicit building types. Abbeys, chapels and generic worship sites remain unassigned where the source does not establish one religion. Read the grouping method ↗

School percentages use education local authorities in England. Worship circles show July 2024 ONS/OS source-classified counts on their own local-authority geography. The two records describe different populations and dates.

Map controls are loading. The source and area table remain available below.

Hatched colours and dashed circles show disclosed component subtotals where the full count is withheld. Grey hatching means no component count is disclosed. ONS withholds counts below five; [c] does not distinguish zero from a small withheld count. Circles represent areas, not building locations. Wales has no school overlay.

Check the coverage

What the source counts can miss.

A disclosed source count is not necessarily a complete inventory. These dated checks keep the official snapshots and independently documented premises separate.

Distinct mosque or Islamic centre premises documented by institution websites.

These are different measures, not a growth calculation. The website review is a documented minimum, not a complete city count or live check of current operations. It does not replace or retrospectively change either official snapshot.

Boundary, method and limits

Each included institution identifies a distinct local premises and prayer provision on its own website or an operator’s website. Some indexed primary-page text was used where direct rendering was unavailable.

Aliases and address variants were reconciled before counting. Previous addresses, proposed premises, separate rooms at one mosque and duplicate listings were not added.

All 14 institutional postcodes map to Bristol City, E06000023, in the ONS August 2026 Postcode Directory. Postcode matching is an area check, not a surveyed property boundary.

Google Maps and local directories were used to discover and cross-check candidates. Search-result totals and map pins were not treated as a census.

The original ONS and GRO datasets remain unchanged. The same verification standard applies to institutions of every religion.

At least 14 distinct mosque or Islamic-centre premises are documented by institution websites. This is a documented minimum, not an exhaustive inventory or a live check of opening hours.

The five in the July 2024 ONS table are sites classified as Mosque in the OS source. The cell is published, not suppressed. It must not be read as the number of all currently active Bristol mosques.

The voluntary GRO register has two Muslim-labelled entries in April 2010 and ten in the September 2026 file. Register entries, OS site classifications and this premises review have different coverage. Differences between these collections do not measure new openings.

Bristol City is the administrative area used here. Nearby places outside the city boundary, and other places with Bristol postal addresses, are not automatically included.

Some websites have undated or older material. The review date records when the sources were checked, not a visit to the premises. Additional directory listings remain unresolved; exclusion does not mean a venue has closed.

Examples not added to this total
  • Shahporan’s former locations: The institution describes moves to its present Doncaster Lane premises. Earlier addresses are not additional current premises.
  • Al-Baseera’s proposed relocation: Fundraising for a future site does not establish a second operating mosque.
  • Ibn Seereen’s bookshop: The institution distinguishes its bookshop from its mosque.
  • Campus prayer rooms and shared halls: Kept outside this dedicated-premises count so unlike types are not combined.
  • DALMO, Bradley Stoke: Outside Bristol City, in South Gloucestershire.

The historical record

Follow the register through time.

Earlier records count registered places of worship. The register excludes Church of England and Church in Wales buildings. It is a different measure from the July 2024 building map above.

National register snapshots from April 2010 and September 2026, grouped using the denomination stated in each entry. Church of England and Church in Wales premises are excluded. Figures for each group are classified subtotals, not complete counts of all its places of worship.

Changes can reflect registration, removal and recorded classifications. They are not an exact tally of openings or closures.

What can these years tell us?

A registration records premises certified for worship. Participation in this register is voluntary, and closures may not be removed promptly. Several registered rooms or premises can relate to one address. The figures do not measure attendance, capacity or the religious identity of residents.

The original ONS tables and the later register extracts have different classification methods. The record selector keeps them separate. Within each record, the same published categories or disclosed classification rules are used across its years. No missing years are estimated.

Hindu and Buddhist places are not separately identified in the earlier ONS tables. The “Other” category cannot be treated as a total for either religion. In the later extracts, an ambiguous denomination stays in its own unassigned category rather than being guessed from a name or address.

The area map remains July 2024. The historical register totals are national figures; they cannot supply historical colours for today’s local-authority boundaries.

Register snapshots · 2010 / 2026

National register snapshots from April 2010 and September 2026, grouped using the denomination stated in each entry. Church of England and Church in Wales premises are excluded. Figures for each group are classified subtotals, not complete counts of all its places of worship.

The voluntary register is separate from the 2024 OS building map. It excludes Church of England and Church in Wales premises; some other Anglican denominations are present.

Only the registered denomination is classified. Premises names, addresses, districts and residents are not used. The identical rules apply to both snapshots.

Ambiguous labels remain unassigned. They account for 1,390 entries in 2010 and 1,402 in 2026; 2 and 2 further entries respectively name multiple families. A single family is assigned to 95.26% and 95.21% of entries respectively.

Christian, Quaker/Friends, Unitarian and Spiritualist subtotals are kept separate. Christian Spiritualist labels are assigned to Spiritualist by the same declared convention in both years.

A zero means no register entries were assigned to that group in the snapshot. It does not establish that no places of that religion existed.

The 2010 document identifies an April snapshot. The latest file was published on 9 September 2026; an exact observation day is not supplied.

Changes can reflect registration, cancellation, notification quality or denomination labels. They do not alone measure physical openings, closures or conversions.

Counts preserve every source row. Registration identifiers are not unique and are not used to deduplicate premises or infer openings and closures.

The older ONS tables use their own published denomination categories. Their Christian subtotal cannot be joined directly to this separately classified series. No intervening years are estimated.

Official national tables · 1999–2006

Original ONS national tables at 30 June each year. Church of England and Church in Wales buildings are excluded. Hindu and Buddhist categories were not separated.

All dates are 30 June of the year shown.

Voluntary register; excludes Church of England and Church in Wales. Not every place of worship is registered.

Changes in registration counts are not equivalent to openings or closures.

Christian subtotal sums the published Christian-denomination columns, including Unitarian, Society of Friends and Jehovah’s Witness, and excludes Church of England and Church in Wales premises.

Hindu and Buddhist counts are not separately available in these tables; Other is not an assignable religion.

Do not merge or interpolate this series with the July 2024 OS/ONS all-building map.

Any later direct register extraction needs its own label-classification audit. The broad Christian subtotal is not automatically comparable to a modern conservative classifier.

How far back does the record go?

The 1851 religious census provides an earlier documentary record. A table in the original 1911 Census General Report ↗ compares its figures with 1911 and explains a difference in what was counted. Those totals have not been joined to the modern series.

Sources, coverage and calculation method

What is being counted?

This is the ONS July 2024 snapshot of places of worship in England and Wales, published on 2024-10-17. The 13 building classes are retained as published. The generic “Place of Worship” classification is a building type in the source; it is distinct from the combined “All places of worship” total.

These are building records. They do not count worshippers, congregations, services or residents by religion. A building classification does not establish whether a site is currently active or how many people use it.

Religion groups and original building types

The Christian group includes Church, Cathedral, Minster and Kingdom Hall. Kingdom Halls belong to Jehovah’s Witnesses, who identify as Christian. Mosque, Gurdwara, Hindu Temple, Buddhist Temple and Synagogue map to their explicitly named religion. The original 13 building types remain available.

These are cautious building-type groupings, not a complete count of every site belonging to a religion. OS does not define Abbey as exclusively Christian, and Chapel includes institutional worship spaces. Those types, together with the generic Place Of Worship and Religious Meeting Place, remain in “Religion not specified by building type”. Unassigned does not mean without religion. Read the OS definitions ↗ · Jehovah’s Witnesses’ own description ↗

Disclosure and coverage are different

A published number means the source has disclosed that classification count. It does not certify that the source contains every relevant active worship premise. Sites may be missing, out of date or classified differently, and a building record does not establish current activity. The 2024 ONS/OS table, GRO register snapshots and our dated institutional-website checks have different definitions and coverage. We retain each source’s figures separately.

The map’s suppression patterns describe which source cells are withheld. They do not show how complete the source is in the real world. We do not recover withheld cells or allocate broad building classes to religions by assumption.

Why so many counts are withheld

ONS applies a confidentiality threshold: counts below five are marked [c]. In this table, 3,073 of 4,134 building-type cells (74.3%) are withheld. That is a share of cells, not buildings. The 13 detailed types include rare categories across 318 districts; all 318 combined area totals remain published. There are no published zeroes in the category cells, and the lowest disclosed count is five. A withheld cell does not establish that a building exists.

The same rule appears in ONS’s wider amenities publication. ONS calls it confidentiality protection but does not explain the specific rationale for withholding these public-site counts or attribute the rule to OS licensing. We do not assume a reason beyond what it publishes. ONS explanation and source notes ↗

Published totals and subtotals

“All places of worship” uses each area’s separately published total. For a religion group, the tool adds only disclosed component values. If any component is withheld, the result is labelled “Published subtotal”; the withheld-component count remains visible. Hatched colour or a dashed circle distinguishes a partial subtotal from a complete count. It must not be treated as an exact religion total or used for complete rankings between areas. A selection with every component withheld has no numerical subtotal.

National subtotals follow the same rule across all districts. The CSV separates complete counts, disclosed subtotals, status and withheld components while retaining all 13 original columns. No protected cell is set to zero, estimated or recovered by subtracting other counts from a total.

Maps and the optional school layer

Worship figures use the local-authority districts in the July 2024 record. Boundaries are simplified for display; the map is not a street-level directory. Larger authorities can contain more buildings simply because they cover a larger area or population.

The optional school layer uses January 2026 whole-school census records for state-funded primary or secondary schools in England. White British pupil share is the reported White British count divided by the relevant school-census pupil population, multiplied by 100. Unknown ethnicity remains in the denominator. A missing share is unavailable, not zero. Read the school dashboards for the full population and quality notes.

The school layer retains its own education-local-authority boundaries. Worship counts appear as proportional circles at interior display points in their original local-authority areas. A circle is an area summary, not a school or place-of-worship location. Wales has no school-census layer here. The separate count and percentage legends identify the units and dates. Spatial proximity is not evidence of a causal relationship.

One published snapshot of places of religious worship in the Ordnance Survey NGD Sites Dataset, July 2024, for 318 local authority districts in England and Wales.

The 13 filters retain the published building-type categories. Place Of Worship and Religious Meeting Place do not establish a religious affiliation.

All buildings uses each authority's separately published total. Category values marked [c] are confidential and remain unavailable, never zero. No protected count is reconstructed from a total, rate or other category.

A category subtotal adds only published counts and is incomplete wherever any authority is suppressed. When every authority is suppressed, no numerical subtotal is shown. National all-building totals sum the complete published authority totals.

The per-100,000 value is retained exactly as published in the downloadable source values. It is not used to infer protected counts or a new population estimate.

The map uses ONS December 2024 generalised district boundaries with an exact match to all 318 source codes. Area markers are interior display positions, not locations of individual places of worship.

These counts describe recorded sites. They do not measure attendance, building capacity, local religious population, openings, closures or changes over time.

An optional school layer uses a separate January 2026 England census snapshot and its own education-authority boundaries. School composition does not establish the religion of pupils or the causes of changes in places of worship.

Historical maps: registered places

The register map compares April 2010 with the file published in September 2026. It counts entries in the voluntary General Register Office register, using the denomination stated in each entry. It excludes Church of England and Church in Wales premises. These classified counts are not a complete inventory of churches, mosques or temples.

Both years use the same comparison areas and classification rules. Historical records are assigned only where the source geography supports the match. Changes in recorded entries can reflect registration, cancellation or reporting; they do not alone measure buildings opening, closing or converting. The separate 2024 ONS map describes building classifications and is not a third point in this register series.

The map uses a fixed colour scale across the two register snapshots for each selected religion. The school layer always remains January 2026 and retains its own boundaries. Read the national history, classifications and original register sources ↓ · Historical area counts and provenance (JSON) ↓
