Corrections

How to report an error and how The Cartulary records material changes.

The public record should improve when an error is found. This policy applies to The Cartulary’s evidence records, calculations, descriptions and briefings.

Tell us what needs checking

Use the contact form and mark your message “Correction”. Include the page address, the statement or value at issue, your proposed correction and supporting sources where possible. Provide only personal information needed to explain the issue.

Review the evidence

Check the challenged material against its sources and calculations. Consider relevant information supplied by people or organisations concerned. A disagreement with an interpretation deserves examination, but does not by itself establish a factual error.

Where the accuracy of a material claim is uncertain, add a visible note, revise it or withdraw it while the issue is reviewed, as appropriate.

Record material changes

Correct factual errors and broken calculations on the affected page. Add a dated note explaining what changed and whether it affects the conclusions. Minor spelling, formatting and link repairs do not normally need a correction notice unless they alter meaning.

A source revision is different from an error in our treatment of the source. Label an update accordingly and retain the earlier reference where useful and appropriate.

If a publication’s central conclusion can no longer be supported, publish a clear withdrawal or replacement notice. Retaining a change history must not require retaining personal information or material that should no longer be public.

Follow connected records

When an error affects a linked chart, briefing or other record, review those uses too. The objective is to correct the evidence wherever the error has been carried forward, not only on the page where it was first reported.
