England / end of key stage 2

The end of primary school.

Explore the recorded ethnicity of pupils reaching the end of key stage 2, usually in Year 6. Compare published cohorts across England’s local authorities.

Observed end-of-primary cohorts. These figures describe pupils eligible for KS2 assessment in state-funded schools. They are not Year 7 admissions, a resident-population estimate or a forecast. The 2026 release is provisional.

England and local areas use the published local-authority basis. Eligibility checks can exclude approved recent arrivals in final releases. We show 2026 separately and withhold changes against earlier final years.

2019 and 2022–2026 are published observations. There are no 2020 or 2021 KS2 assessment cohorts in this series. Changes compare different groups of pupils; they do not track the same children. A hatched area has a withheld, missing or non-comparable figure, never an assumed zero.

Which pupils are counted?

The Department for Education’s end-of-key-stage-2 eligible pupil count is used for the selected ethnic group and the matching all-pupil denominator. The population is the state-funded-school KS2 assessment cohort, usually Year 6, including state-funded special schools. Local-authority figures exclude hospital schools. It is not every child of a particular age, a count of test passes or a record of subsequent secondary-school destinations. Areas refer to school locations, not pupils’ home addresses.

What does the percentage mean?

The group count is divided by the corresponding published eligible-pupil total. Unclassified or unrecorded ethnicity remains within that total. England uses DfE’s published comparator on the local-authority basis; it is not the headline national total and is not calculated by adding local-authority rows. Revised and final local figures can exclude approved recent arrivals from overseas whose first language is not English. Local figures also include some pending, missing and prior-year result codes excluded from the headline national series. Ethnicity does not identify citizenship, birthplace, immigration status or the reason for a change.

Which comparisons are available?

Every year is a separately observed cohort. No values are interpolated for 2020 or 2021. The 2026 figures are provisional and may be revised. They have not yet incorporated the same checking and approved pupil discounting as final releases, so no change against 2026 is shown. Final-year changes are percentage points from 2019, calculated before rounding. Where a boundary change or source definition prevents a like-for-like area comparison, the change remains unavailable. Historical figures use the appropriate authority geography; a local authority can therefore appear or disappear between years.

Missing and protected figures

Published disclosure-control symbols are retained in the data. Withheld, unavailable and non-comparable figures are shown with a dash or hatching, never zero. No withheld value is reconstructed from other categories. A visible zero is a published zero. These are aggregate statistics without pupil identities.
